Target Shooting is an exciting Sport

It is one of a small number of sports open to almost anyone, irrespective of many disabilities, age, gender, fitness, people with good eyesight or those who wear glasses, in fact people from all walks of life. Every person takes something different from the sport.

Smallbore rifle shooting is a precision sport that involves shooting with small-caliber rifles, typically .22 calibre (5.6mm) single shot target rifles,  firing .22 rimfire ammunition at paper, cardboard or electronic targets at distances of 25 yards to 100 yards.

Smallbore shooters in New Zealand range from social Club shooters to a few highly competitive international elite shooters.  If you want to simply be a social shooter that's great, and you are very welcome to enjoy our sport at that level.  However, if you want a challenge, there are Shooters development pathways.

Key skills you will learn in the sport:

1. **Marksmanship Fundamentals**:
- Mastery of the basic elements of shooting, such as proper sight alignment, trigger control, and breath control.

2. **Steady Positioning**:
- The ability to maintain a stable shooting position, whether prone, kneeling, or standing. This requires balance and endurance to hold a steady aim for extended periods.

3. **Concentration**:
- Mental focus is crucial. Smallbore rifle shooting demands intense concentration to aim precisely and maintain consistency throughout the match.

4. **Patience and Discipline**:
- The sport requires calmness and patience, especially in competitions where shots need to be deliberate and controlled.

5. **Breathing Techniques**:
- Learning to control breathing to minimize movement while firing is essential, especially when shooting between breaths.

6. **Hand-Eye Coordination**:
- Fine-tuned hand-eye coordination helps in aiming and adjusting to the small targets typical of smallbore shooting.

7. **Equipment Knowledge**:
- A solid understanding of the rifle and its components, such as adjusting sights, cleaning, and maintaining the firearm for optimal performance.

8. **Endurance and Physical Fitness**:
- Smallbore shooting for those competing often involves long matches. Physical fitness, particularly in the back and core muscles, helps shooters maintain stability and stamina.

9. **Adaptability**:
- The ability to adjust to different ranges, lighting, and environmental conditions is key to success in competitions.

The sport of target shooting is both an Individual and team sport.

Every time you pick up your rifle, you challenge yourself to be better than you were before. The thrill when you accomplished this is priceless!
